    I can't be the only one who wishes I was like Nigella in the kitchen? She's so bloody graceful and sexy when she cooks. She makes it look so damn easy. Like seriously who makes stuffing a turkey look like hot?

    I am no Nigella in the kitchen. There are people out there that naturally just good in the kitchen. I am not one of those people. It took me a whole lot of time and experimenting to get it right so I wanted to share some tips with you which might be helpful in getting you more confident and better in the kitchen:

    Don’t Cut Corners
    I'm talking baking here. I learnt fairly early on that I don't really have the patience for baking. I like to chuck in a-bit-of-this, a-bit-of-that when I cook and as baking is all about precision, we don't lend ourselves naturally to each other. So trying to save time by cutting corners is a bad idea. If you want all of your recipes to turn out right, you're going to need to put the time in and do it properly.

    As you get a bit more confident, you should start to develop an eye for the little details which makes a massive difference to the way your dishes turn out. I've made so many cakes/cupcakes in a rush which have turned out so un-photogenic that they don't even get featured on here. So tip number one - take your time! It makes the results really worth it in the end.

    Add Your Own Spin on Things
    This is what I enjoy! Once you get more confident following recipes, you can start to go a bit left-field and start putting your on spin on things. You don’t need to do anything extravagant - no-one really wants a mince trifle - but swapping in different ingredients you love lets you put your own little stamp on things. You can also end up uncovering some awesome flavour combinations!

    The way you present your food matters just as much as the way the food tastes. People will judge your food without realising they are doing it, so make sure it looks mouth watering and it’ll enhance their experience all that much more. White plates are great for showing off colours and fun shaped bowls help keep things interesting. I find it's better to avoid symmetry when plating up but it depends on the look you're going for!

    Invest in Good Equipment
    Having good equipment does help to get the job done faster and sometimes better. I'm talking trying to make meringues with a hand whisk here. Do your research first though and find out what you need - don't go forking out hundreds of pounds on the shiniest thing in the shop, but equally you don't want to end up with the smallest and least powerful stand mixer of KitchenAid if you're going to be using all the time. You need to know that what you’re buying is worth the moolah.

    Keep it clean people
    Good hygiene goes hand-in-hand with great food, so make sure you’re being nice and clean as you cook. Also try to clean your surfaces as you go so you don't end up with a mountain of washing up at the end!

    Make the Most of Herbs and Spices
    Herbs and spices can make such a difference to a dish, like seriously. They can really help to enhance the natural flavours of your ingredients and bring it all to life. Next time you go to reach for the salt, think about what other herbs or spices you have which would work better- it's a great way to make your recipes a little healthier and sometimes tastier too!

    Keep Your Knives Sharp
    A sharp knife will be your best friend. They make all the difference between precise, clean cut food and food that looks like it’s just been hacked at with a saw. You can sharpen them with proper equipment, or you can use an old mug. I was sent a Joseph Joseph chopping board with a handy knife sharpener built in which is a gods-send!

    1. I completely agree with you, washing up as you go along makes baking & cooking a lot more enjoyable if you do that. Haha!
